Frequently Asked Questions
What is custard powder, and what can I use instead?
Custard powder is a cornstarch-based mix (such as Bird’s Custard) that thickens into a creamy, vanilla-flavored pudding when cooked with milk. The recipe uses 3–4 tablespoons with 500 ml of milk, following the packet directions. If you can’t find it, instant vanilla pudding mix is the closest substitute — use it at the same ratio and follow its instructions.
When should I reduce the sugar for the stewed apples?
Step 3 advises reducing by 1 tablespoon if the apples are very sweet. The base amount is 1/4 cup sugar — taste the apples before adding and hold back a tablespoon if you’re using a naturally sweet variety.
