The Bright and Rainy Cocktail

This cocktail is an homage to those bright and rainy spring days. A play on the dark and stormy, but for spring with gin, ginger, and peach.

Spring is creeping into most of the Northern hemisphere.  The sun has come out a little more often, the days are longer, some milder weather has whetted our appetites.  Even when it rains it’s not dark and gloomy, but rather bright, as if the sun is just behind the layer of clouds reminding us that he will be back soon.  The rain is not depressing, it’s life-giving.

Bright and rainy 4

This cocktail is an homage to those bright and rainy days: a play on the dark and stormy, but for spring.  Its colours are light and translucent with gin instead of dark rum.  Some peach schnapps adds a light fruitiness hinting at the summer harvest to come.  Even the ginger ale seems brighter when paired with these flavours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this cocktail based on, and how does it differ from a Dark and Stormy?

The article describes it as a spring riff on the Dark and Stormy. The key difference is gin (1 1/2 oz) in place of dark rum, which gives the drink a lighter, more translucent appearance. Peach schnapps (1/2 oz) adds a fruity brightness that dark rum wouldn’t provide.

Can I use ginger ale instead of ginger beer?

The recipe lists “ginger beer/ginger ale” as interchangeable, and the article notes that “even the ginger ale seems brighter when paired with these flavours.” Ginger beer will give a spicier, more pronounced ginger kick while ginger ale produces a milder, sweeter result — both work in this recipe’s 3 oz measure.

  1. What makes it the light blue color? Is it the combo if the peach schnapps and lime? We are trying to make these for a baby shower but wanted to make a non-booze option as well.

    1. The pictures actually lie a little bit – the cocktail isn’t blue, but rather a little foggy. The black background creates the blueish hue… However, if you really want them blue – you could always add a little natural food coloring.
