Springtime Gin Fizz

A classic taken to a whole new dimension of deliciousness for the springtime holidays.

Celebrating spring this year with a new family, I have been delightfully initiated into their traditions. A Gin Fizz is their way to start the morning and I can’t complain. With a hint of nutmeg to spice up this creamy cold refreshment, it is like a spring time egg nog. An IBA official Gin Fizz uses gin (of course), fresh lemon juice, soda water, and gomme syrup. Our Gin Fizz gets creamier with Haagan-Dazs Vanilla ice cream, equal parts orange juice to set the morning right, nutmeg to spice it up, and sprite to give it the sweet fizz it needs. The classics are a great place to start but where this family has taken this drink is a whole new dimension of deliciousness.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this gin fizz differ from the classic IBA Gin Fizz?

The article explains this directly: the IBA official Gin Fizz uses gin, fresh lemon juice, soda water, and gomme syrup. This family version replaces the lemon-soda base with Haagen-Dazs Vanilla ice cream (5 oz / 150 g), Sprite, and orange juice, then adds ½ tsp of fresh grated nutmeg — making it closer to a creamy spring eggnog than a classic fizz.

Why is fresh-grated nutmeg used rather than pre-ground?

The recipe calls for ½ tsp of fresh grated nutmeg blended in, plus extra for garnish grated over each glass. Freshly grated nutmeg is significantly more aromatic than pre-ground — its volatile oils haven’t had time to dissipate, which is why the recipe uses it as both a flavor element and a visible finishing garnish.
