Pomegranate Smoothie

Pomegranate juice blended with bananas, yogurt, and honey, topped with pomegranate seeds. Four real ingredients. Thick, tart, and a deep purple.

A smoothie should not need six superfoods and a protein powder to be worth drinking. This one has four ingredients plus a garnish: pomegranate juice, two bananas, yogurt, and honey. Blended. Poured. Topped with pomegranate seeds. It is simple and it tastes like something you would pay eight dollars for at a juice bar, which is exactly why I make it at home.

The colour is a deep reddish-purple from the pomegranate, and the texture is thick from the frozen bananas. A teaspoon or two of honey if you want it sweeter, but taste it first. Depending on the juice and how ripe the bananas are, you might not need any. The pomegranate seeds on top pop between your teeth and cut through the smooth liquid.

How to Make Pomegranate Smoothie

Use Frozen Bananas for Thickness

Peel the bananas, break into pieces, and freeze them. Frozen bananas blend into a thick, creamy base that replaces ice. Fresh bananas make a thinner smoothie that needs ice cubes, which dilute the pomegranate flavour.

If you forgot to freeze them, use fresh bananas and add 4-5 ice cubes. The result is thinner but still good.

Garnish with Seeds

Pour into glasses and scatter pomegranate seeds on top. They float on the surface and burst when you drink through them.

To get the seeds out easily: cut the pomegranate in half, hold each half cut-side down over a bowl, and hit the back firmly with a wooden spoon. The seeds fall out in seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pomegranate juice should I use?

100% pomegranate juice, not a blend. Check the label. Many pomegranate juices are mostly apple or grape juice. Pure pomegranate is tart and deeply coloured.

Can I use soy yogurt?

Yes. The recipe works with low-fat dairy yogurt or soya yogurt. Either one adds creaminess and tempers the tartness. Use plain, not flavoured.

How do I get pomegranate seeds out easily?

Cut the pomegranate in half. Hold each half cut-side down over a bowl and hit the back firmly with a wooden spoon. The seeds fall out. Pick out any white pith. Takes 2 minutes.
