Going Green has long been in fashion, but with more and more people embracing the concept of healthy living and healthy eating, it has become more of a lifestyle change rather than a fad followed by few. And I must say, I am totally in sync with this change. These days, everyone seems to work 24/7, and with such busy lifestyles that put our minds and bodies into overload, the least we can do to take care of our health is to eat right. I do not need to stress the importance of eating your fair share of fruits and veggies everyday, but I agree, it can get a bit mundane. So to jazz things up, try this highly nutritious, but equally beautiful and delicious Green Smoothie. Vita-mix has made it very easy for people to make raw juices, but even if you have a regular high-speed blender, you can still enjoy an enriching smoothie which will boost your metabolism, enhance your immune system, and not taste like medicine!
This lovely recipe has been adapted from the Daily Bite blog, and is a keeper for each and everyone who values good health. I swapped the almond milk for coconut milk because I love its nutty creamy taste and texture, and I wanted a thicker smoothie, and I swapped the cucumber for celery, just because I didn’t have cucumber on hand, and also because the latter is considered healthier. The fruits in the recipe will be enough to make it sweet, but if you want to feed this to your kid and you face some resistance, try adding a pinch of sugar to tone down the flavor of the greens. The next time your heart wavers towards Pancakes for breakfast, try to digress it with a glass of this Smoothie instead. [Photo via wildtofu @ flickr]
- ½ medium ripe banana
- ½ cup frozen mango or pineapple chunks
- 1 cup mild greens such as baby spinach
- 1 two-inch piece cucumber, peeled or unpeeled
- ¼ of a ripe avocado
- ¼ cup unsweetened almond or coconut milk
- ¼ cup water
- As you can probably guess, there's nothing much to this recipe then simply using a Blender.
- Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend on high until smooth.
- Garnish with some celery or mint sprigs, if you like. Serve immediately.
This Green Smoothie is packed with vital nutrients – iron, calcium, omega-3 fats, vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants, these are just few of the power boosters that you are adding to your body by drinking a glass of this lovely concoction. And there are several variations you can use to make it suit your taste-buds. Drop in a handful of strawberries, use kale or swiss chard instead of spinach, or skip the fruits and go the savory way by adding a pinch of salt, some mint and rosemary for a unique flavor variation. Keep trying till you develop a taste that you love, and incorporate it in your daily meals. I promise you, you will not need any more supplements!
