Description
These chocolate cupcakes with a hidden plain chocolate center and white chocolate drizzle are a delightful treat that doesn’t require complex ingredients or techniques.
Ingredients
- 85 gm self raising flour
- 55 gm butter
- 55 gm castor sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- 55 gm plain chocolate
- white chocolate 55 gm (for decoration)
- *Instead of using a self raising flour, I used 85 gm plain flour and 1tsp baking powder*
- *If you don't get a large egg- 2 small ones can be used*
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a cupcake tray with paper cases.
- In a large bowl, combine 85 gm self-raising flour, 55 gm butter, 55 gm caster sugar, 1 large egg, and 1 tbsp cocoa powder. Beat together until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Spoon half of the mixture into the prepared cupcake cases, filling each about halfway.
- With a small spoon, make an indentation in the middle of each cupcake and place a piece of plain chocolate inside.
- Cover the chocolate with the remaining batter, filling each case almost to the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cupcakes to cool completely on a wire rack.
- Once cooled, melt 55 gm of white chocolate and drizzle over the top of each cupcake for decoration.
Notes
- For best results, ensure all ingredients are at room temperature before starting.
- Store cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- You can substitute dark chocolate for the plain chocolate if preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the surprise piece of chocolate inside the cupcake?
After spooning half the batter into the cupcake cases, you press a piece of plain chocolate into the center of each before covering it with the remaining batter. When baked at 180°C (350°F), the enclosed chocolate melts into a fudgy pocket inside the cupcake.
Is the white chocolate on top a frosting or a drizzle?
It is a drizzle, not a frosting. Once the cupcakes have cooled completely, 55 g of white chocolate is melted and drizzled over the top of each cupcake for decoration. There is no buttercream or piped frosting in this recipe.
Can I use plain flour instead of self-raising flour?
Yes — the ingredient list explicitly offers this swap: use 85 g of plain flour plus 1 tsp of baking powder in place of the 85 g of self-raising flour.
