Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the recipe recommend mixing the ingredients by hand?

The instructions say “with hands is best” when combining the 2 lbs ground sausage, 1 1/2 cups biscuit mix, 18 oz shredded cheddar, and remaining ingredients. Mixing by hand lets you feel when everything is evenly distributed without overworking the mixture, which can toughen the balls.

What type of pan works best, and why?

The recipe notes that the sausage balls release drippings as they bake at 375°F, so a pan with a lip (like a rimmed baking sheet) is important to catch the fat and prevent oven drips.

How can I make these spicier?

The ingredient list includes “1 tbsp SPICY! hot pepper flakes if you want to spice it up!!” as an optional add-in — stir them into the mixture before forming the balls.
