Spooky Screwdriver

This Halloween cocktail layers grenadine, orange juice, and black-tinted vodka in a martini glass, poured slowly over a spoon for distinct, dramatic strata.

Halloween cocktails often go for shock value over actual drinkability. But this layered screwdriver is dramatic to look at and good to drink. The layering technique, pouring each component slowly over the back of a spoon, creates distinct strata of deep red grenadine, bright orange juice. Inky black vodka that look like something out of a gothic still life. Solid, and it looks like a magic trick on the way down.

It takes about ten minutes to put together and serves two, so it scales easily for a crowd. The black food coloring goes into both the vodka and the corn syrup rim coating, giving you that spooky aesthetic from the first sip to the last. Pour carefully and do not rush the spoon technique: patience is what keeps the layers intact. For a non-alcoholic version, swap the vodka for chilled soda water tinted with black food coloring. The grenadine gives the bottom layer a tart, pomegranate sweetness that keeps the orange juice from tasting flat, regardless of which version you make.

Prepare the Black Rim and Black Vodka

Mix a few drops of black food coloring into 4 tablespoons of corn syrup in a shallow bowl. Dip the rim of 2 martini glasses into the mixture to coat. In a separate small container, stir a few more drops of black food coloring into the 4 ounces of vodka until evenly colored.

Layer the Cocktail

Pour 2 ounces of grenadine into the bottom of each rimmed glass. Very slowly pour the orange juice over the back of a spoon so it sits in a distinct layer above the grenadine. Finally, pour the black vodka slowly over the spoon to create the top layer. Serve immediately for the clearest layering effect.

Description

Grenadine, orange juice, and black-tinted vodka poured in slow layers over the back of a spoon for a martini glass that looks like a gothic still life. Ten minutes, serves two, scales easily for a crowd.

Ingredients

Units
  • 4 tablespoons corn syrup
  • Black food coloring
  • 4 ounces grenadine
  • 8 ounces orange juice
  • 4 ounces vodka (substitute soda water for non-alcoholic)

Instructions

  1. Add the corn syrup to a shallow bowl and mix in a few drops of black food coloring and mix well.
  2. Dip the rim of 2 martini glasses into the mixture to coat the rim.
  3. Add a few drops of black food coloring to the vodka and mix well.
  4. Pour the grenadine into the bottom of each glass.
  5. Add the orange juice, very slowly pouring over the back of a spoon.
  6. Top each with the black vodka, pouring slowly over a spoon.

Notes

  • Pour each layer slowly over the back of a spoon — rushing it is the number one reason the layers blur together instead of staying distinct.
  • Color both the vodka and the corn syrup rim ahead of time so you’re not mixing food coloring while guests are watching.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, swap the vodka for chilled soda water tinted with black food coloring — the layering works exactly the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get the layers to stay separate?

Pour each liquid slowly over the back of a spoon. The spoon disperses the liquid so it floats onto the layer below rather than sinking through it. Liquids with different densities layer naturally, with the heaviest on the bottom.

How do I make a non-alcoholic version?

Replace the vodka with an equal amount of soda water mixed with black food coloring. The rest of the recipe stays the same, and the layering technique works identically.

Can I make a large batch for a party?

The grenadine and orange juice can be pre-measured in a pitcher, but the layering needs to be done glass by glass at serving time. Mix the black vodka in a small pouring vessel and layer each glass individually for the best visual effect.
