Description
Grenadine, orange juice, and black-tinted vodka poured in slow layers over the back of a spoon for a martini glass that looks like a gothic still life. Ten minutes, serves two, scales easily for a crowd.
Ingredients
Units
- 4 tablespoons corn syrup
- Black food coloring
- 4 ounces grenadine
- 8 ounces orange juice
- 4 ounces vodka (substitute soda water for non-alcoholic)
Instructions
- Add the corn syrup to a shallow bowl and mix in a few drops of black food coloring and mix well.
- Dip the rim of 2 martini glasses into the mixture to coat the rim.
- Add a few drops of black food coloring to the vodka and mix well.
- Pour the grenadine into the bottom of each glass.
- Add the orange juice, very slowly pouring over the back of a spoon.
- Top each with the black vodka, pouring slowly over a spoon.
Notes
- Pour each layer slowly over the back of a spoon — rushing it is the number one reason the layers blur together instead of staying distinct.
- Color both the vodka and the corn syrup rim ahead of time so you’re not mixing food coloring while guests are watching.
- For a non-alcoholic version, swap the vodka for chilled soda water tinted with black food coloring — the layering works exactly the same.
