Tasca d’Almerita: Have You Ever Tried Island Wine?

Most wine lovers have explore many different Italian wine regions, but have you tried Tasca d’Almerita? It is a winemaking family with vineyards on Mozia, an archaeological site in western Sicily. It’s time to try island wine.

With over 200 years of experience, Tasca d’Almerita is one of Sicily’s most notable winemaking family, with vineyards on both the main island and the surrounding small islands. One of their most intriguing vineyard sites is Tenuta Whitaker on the former Phoenician island of Mozia.

Fragments of walls, gates, pieces of pottery and artifacts still exist on the island, which makes it a history buff and explorer’s dream come true.

With 17 acres on Mozia, Tasca d’Almerita plants Grillo grapes on this island. Because of protections, there is no production facility on the small island. Instead, grapes are hand-harvested and transferred quickly to the Sicilian mainland where winemaking can begin.

This is a special wine, made with care and steeped in history.

2017 Tenuta Whitaker Mozia Grillo $22
Made with 100% Grillo grapes, this white wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks for five months on the lees. The wine is bright with aromas of lemongrass, herbs and white pepper. It is a fresh wine with a pleasantly salty finish, hinting to the salt flats around the island.

Serve this wine with grilled fish or a light, lemony seafood pasta.
