- 2 medium sized baguettes or 1 long baguette(preferably 1 day old)
- 3 cloves garlic-minced finely
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 3 tbsp Ottoman spice mix
- 1 tsp Kosher salt (or coarse sea salt)
For ottoman spice mix
- 1/2 tsp saffron strands
- 1 tbsp sumac ( you can get this at any Arabic/Middle eastern store)
- 1 tbsp oregano
- 1 tbsp chilli flakes
- 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp ground mint
- 1 t bsp ground fennel
- 1 tbsp dried marjoram
- 1 tbsp thyme
- 1 tbsp dried ginger
- 1 tbsp ground cumin
Instructions
- Prepare the Ottoman spice mix by combining saffron, red chili flakes, thyme, and marjoram. Grind them to a fine powder and store in an airtight container.
- Cut the baguette into 1-inch cubes.
- Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add the minced garlic to the oil and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the baguette cubes to the pan and toss to coat them evenly with the garlic oil.
- Sprinkle the Ottoman spice mix and salt over the bread cubes, ensuring even coverage.
- Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for 8-10 minutes until the croutons are golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool before serving.
Notes
These croutons can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week. Use them to add a flavorful crunch to salads or soups. The Ottoman spice mix can also be used as a seasoning for roasted meats or vegetables.
