Scale
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup buttermilk, well-shaken
- 1 heaping tsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 4 slices challah (or other bread)
- Canola or other flavorless oil for frying
- Optional toppings: honey, agave, or your favorite liqueur
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, brown sugar, flour, and vanilla extract until well combined. The mixture may be slightly thick, but that’s okay.
- Pour the mixture into a shallow dish. Place the bread slices in the dish and soak for at least 1 minute on each side, ensuring they are well-coated.
- Heat a generous amount of canola oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Once the oil is hot, carefully place the soaked bread slices into the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from the skillet and drain on paper towels if necessary.
- Serve hot with your choice of toppings such as honey, agave, or a splash of your favorite liqueur.
Notes
This recipe is a great way to use up leftover buttermilk. It pairs well with sweeter breads like challah. Avoid using sourdough as it might be too sour, but you can balance it with sweeter toppings. Experiment with different sweeteners like honey or agave for a unique twist.
