Description

Flavor-packed tofu braised to perfection in a rich sauce. Topped with crunchy peanuts and fresh herbs for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lbs (454 g) fried tofu
  • 1/2 cup white wine or rice wine
  • 2 cups (473 ml) water
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 tbsp roasted peanut powder
  • 1 tbsp coriander or herbs you like

Instructions

  1. If using packaged fried tofu, cut each piece in half. If the tofu is in large blocks, cut into 1.5-inch cubes.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the fried tofu, sesame oil, soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice wine (or white wine), honey, and water. Stir gently to mix without breaking the tofu.
  3. Bring the liquid to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover with a lid slightly ajar, and let it braise for 30 minutes, stirring carefully every 10 minutes. The tofu will absorb the flavors of the sauce as it simmers.
  4. Remove the lid, increase the heat to medium-high, and let the sauce reduce until you have roughly 1/2 cup remaining. This takes about 5-7 minutes. Stir occasionally and watch closely so the sauce thickens but does not burn.
  5. Transfer the tofu and sauce to a serving dish. The sauce should coat the tofu in a glossy, savory glaze.
  6. Sprinkle the roasted peanut powder generously over the top and scatter fresh coriander leaves around the dish. Serve with steamed rice.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use firm or extra-firm tofu and press it to remove excess water before braising.
  • If you don’t have oyster sauce, you can substitute with an extra tablespoon of soy sauce and a teaspoon of fish sauce.
  • Store leftover braised tofu in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently over low heat before serving.
