Description

This Green Apple Chutney is a sweet and tangy condiment that pairs perfectly with Indian dishes like dosas, idlis, flatbreads, and rice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 Granny Smith apples
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 dry red chilies
  • 1 sprig of curry leaves
  • 1-2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Grate the apples with the skin on and set aside. Do this only when you have all the other ingredients ready, as the apples will change color quickly.
  2. Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat.
  3. Add the mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Once the mustard seeds start popping, add the cumin seeds, dry red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add the grated apples to the pan and stir well to combine with the spices.
  6. Add sugar and salt, and mix thoroughly.
  7. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft and the chutney has thickened slightly.
  8. Remove from heat and let it cool before serving.

Notes

  • Grate the apples just before cooking to prevent them from browning.
  • This chutney pairs well with Indian meals such as dosas, idlis, and rice.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • Adjust the sugar according to the sweetness of the apples.
