Description

Grilled carapau, or mackerel, is a Portuguese Summer favorite, offering a simple yet flavorful dish with just salt, olive oil, and optional lemon and cilantro.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 fresh carapau (mackerel)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Olive oil, for drizzling
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro (coentros), chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the carapau under cool water to remove any loose scales and pat dry with paper towels.
  2. Place the fish in a tray and season each side with salt.
  3. Drizzle olive oil over the fish, ensuring each side is lightly coated.
  4. Preheat your grill to a high temperature.
  5. Place the seasoned fish on the hot grill.
  6. Grill the carapau for about 10 minutes on each side, or until the skin is crispy and the flesh is opaque and flakes easily with a fork.
  7. Remove from the grill and squeeze fresh lemon juice over the fish, if using.
  8. Garnish with chopped cilantro before serving, if desired.

Notes

For best results, use fresh carapau. If fresh cilantro is unavailable, parsley can be used as a substitute. Serve with a side of grilled vegetables or a fresh salad. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
