Description
Grilled carapau, or mackerel, is a Portuguese Summer favorite, offering a simple yet flavorful dish with just salt, olive oil, and optional lemon and cilantro.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 fresh carapau (mackerel)
- Salt, to taste
- Olive oil, for drizzling
- 1 lemon, cut into wedges (optional)
- Fresh cilantro (coentros), chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse the carapau under cool water to remove any loose scales and pat dry with paper towels.
- Place the fish in a tray and season each side with salt.
- Drizzle olive oil over the fish, ensuring each side is lightly coated.
- Preheat your grill to a high temperature.
- Place the seasoned fish on the hot grill.
- Grill the carapau for about 10 minutes on each side, or until the skin is crispy and the flesh is opaque and flakes easily with a fork.
- Remove from the grill and squeeze fresh lemon juice over the fish, if using.
- Garnish with chopped cilantro before serving, if desired.
Notes
For best results, use fresh carapau. If fresh cilantro is unavailable, parsley can be used as a substitute. Serve with a side of grilled vegetables or a fresh salad. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
