Scale
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) buttermilk, well-shaken
- 1 heaping tsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 4 slices challah (or other bread)
- Canola or other flavorless oil for frying
- Optional toppings: honey, agave, or your favorite liqueur
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, brown sugar, flour, and vanilla extract until well combined. The mixture may be slightly thick, but that’s okay.
- Pour the mixture into a shallow dish. Place the bread slices in the dish and soak for at least 1 minute on each side, ensuring they are well-coated.
- Heat a generous amount of canola oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Once the oil is hot, carefully place the soaked bread slices into the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from the skillet and drain on paper towels if necessary.
- Serve hot with your choice of toppings such as honey, agave, or a splash of your favorite liqueur.
Notes
- This recipe is a great way to use up leftover buttermilk.
- It pairs well with sweeter breads like challah.
- Avoid using sourdough as it might be too sour, but you can balance it with sweeter toppings.
- Experiment with different sweeteners like honey or agave for a unique twist.
