Description

Sliced apples tossed with caramel and a pinch of salt, baked in a prepared crust until the filling bubbles and the top turns deep golden brown.

Ingredients

Units
  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup store-bought or homemade caramel sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon flaky sea salt
  • 2 store-bought or homemade pie crusts (top and bottom)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your pie crust and set aside.
  2. Slice apples and mix with caramel and a pinch of salt.
  3. Fill the pie crust with the apple mixture.
  4. Bake until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.

Notes

  • Use a caramel with real depth — a pale, overly sweet caramel gets lost once it bakes down with the apples.
  • Slice the apples thin and even so they all cook through at the same rate.
  • Let the pie cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing so the filling sets; closer to an hour gives you the cleanest pieces.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream or creme fraiche — the cold, plain contrast plays well against the salt.
