Description

Champurrado is a slightly spicier and thicker version of hot chocolate. Drink it to ward off the winter blues.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp masa
  • 1 disk of Mexican chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • 1 star anise
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1.5 tbsp maple syrup, or to taste

Instructions

  1. In a small pot over medium-high heat, bring the water to a simmer and add the masa. Stir with a whisk until the masa thickens and there are no chunks. Add the cinnamon, star anise, sea salt and chocolate and stir until the chocolate is completely melted.
  2. Add the milk and keep stirring until very smooth. Add the maple syrup, taste for sweetness, and then bring the mixture to a steady simmer, whisking constantly for frothiness.
  3. Serve immediately.
