Description

Quick, flavorful Korean-style beef and rice. Perfect for a budget-friendly weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lbs (454 g) lean ground beef
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 small purple onion
  • 0.5 cups (118 ml) packed brown sugar
  • 0.5 cups (118 ml) reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 4 tsp sesame oil
  • 0.25 - 0.5 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 0.25 tsp pepper
  • 2 cups (473 ml) hot cooked rice
  • 3 green onions

Instructions

For the Beef

  1. In a large skillet, cook beef, garlic, and purple onion over medium heat for 6–8 minutes, or until the beef is no longer pink; break the beef into crumbles.
  2. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix brown sugar, soy sauce, oil, and seasonings.
  3. Stir the sauce into the beef and heat through.
  4. Serve with rice.
  5. Sprinkle with green onions.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use a combination of soy sauce and mirin in the sauce.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the microwave or on the stovetop.
  • If you don’t have brown sugar, you can substitute with granulated sugar, but the flavor will be slightly different.
