Description

Hearty and flavorful sloppy joes, slow-cooked to perfection. A comforting weeknight meal the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lbs (454 g) extra lean ground beef
  • 1 lbs (454 g) sausage meat
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 medium green pepper
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 7 oz (213 ml) tomato sauce
  • 16 oz (454 g) diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp chili powder
  • Salt
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 8 hamburg buns
  • Cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large sauté pan over medium-high heat, add the beef, sausage, onion, and green pepper. Cook until the meat is browned.
  2. Drain if necessary, then add ½ cup water to scrape up any caramelized bits in the pan while stirring and let evaporate.
  3. Add this mixture to your slow cooker.
  4. Add the rest of the ingredients except the flour and stir well.
  5. Cover and cook slowly on low for 7 hours or on high for 4 hours.
  6. About 20 minutes prior to finishing, mix the flour with warm water and whisk into the sloppy joes.
  7. Turn to high and let bubble and thicken.
  8. Place a large spoonful on the bottom of a hamburger bun.
  9. Top with cheddar cheese and run quickly under a broiler.
  10. Top with the other bun and serve.

Notes

  • For richer flavor, use a combination of ground beef and pork sausage instead of all beef.
  • To prevent overly dry sloppy joes, add an extra ¼ cup of water if the mixture seems too thick during the last hour of cooking.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheated on the stovetop or in the microwave.
